Offensive tackle Antonio Logan-El stands 6-foot-5 and weighs 315 pounds, but he remained mostly unnoticed during his first official practice as a member of the Towson football team.
A blue chip recruit from Forestville High School in Prince George?s County, Logan-El knows his status or the time he spent as a redshirt freshman at Penn State last season means nothing as he restarts his playing career as a Tiger.
“I?m not looking back anymore–I?m just looking forward,” said Logan-El after Monday?s practice. “I want to get training camp under my belt, and have a good showing out here.”
Logan-El, who was regarded as one of the country?s top high school offensive linemen as a seniorin 2005, walked through drills while nursing a sore hamstring he injured during an individual training session last week.
He said he expects to be able to “go full throttle,” by Wednesday.
When he returns, he enters competition for the starting left tackle job vacated by Jermon Bushrod, who was a fourth-round selection by the New Orleans Saints during this past spring?s NFL Draft.
Offensive line coach John Donatelli said it would be hard for any player to replace Bushrod. However, Donatelli believes Logan-El has the talent to perform at the same level.
“As far as productivity goes, it should be Antonio, or Leon [Stevenson] or [Adam] Pritts to step up and take it over,” Donatelli said. “It should be Antonio with his ability, but whether or not he?s going to do it, it?s up to him.”
Somewhat flustered by the amount of media attention his new student has received, Donatelli said Logan-El has the athleticism and explosiveness to match the size needed to dominate.
“He hasn?t done it at this level,” he said. “He was at Penn State, but he didn?t really participate that much. He missed some time in training camp and did some good stuff with the scout team but he has yet to crack the egg.”
Logan-El said he is focused on proving to his teammates here is here to win games.
“I would have not been happy if they just gave me this spot,” he said. “I need to earn this spot. It shows tradition and pride in this program and you can?t do anything but respect that.”
