Nation split on Trump plan to cut NATO spending, 42% say YES

The nation is divided over Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s suggestion that U.S. spending on NATO be scaled back and redirected to the crumbling infrastructure back home.

The latest YouGov.com poll finds that 42 percent support his plan, 45 percent don’t.

Trump’s call to cut NATO spending did not come with a threat to pull out, or even pull back. Instead, he is seeking other nations impacted much more by a potential war in Europe and protected by NATO to pony up more money.

It is part of his evolving foreign policy that seeks to enter conflicts that the U.S. is likely to win, and to urge other nations more impacted to play a larger role.

His top national security advisor, Sen. Jeff Sessions, the Alabama Republican, said, “I think Donald Trump instinctively grasps international relations and power.”
