Authorities recover dozens of plastic bags filled with body parts in Mexican ravine

Law enforcement officials in the western Mexican state of Jalisco recovered 26 plastic bags containing human remains in a ravine Tuesday.

An initial search of the ravine in Tonala, a city near Guadalajara, yielded 14 plastic bags filled with body parts. In a second search of the ravine on Wednesday, authorities found 12 additional plastic bags.

The state’s forensic science institute is working to determine how many victims were recovered from the ravine. Jalisco has witnessed an uptick in disappearances and homicides over the past several weeks in connection to the expansion of the Jalisco New Generation cartel. Authorities have not said whether they believe the cartel is responsible.

This is not the first time that several plastic bags containing human remains have been recovered in Jalisco. In September, 37 bodies were found dismembered in 119 plastic bags that were buried in a shallow grave near Zapopan, Jalisco. In October, a similar scene unfolded in a parking lot where officers discovered 15 bags filled with bodies.
