As the Redskins showed us against the Saints, destiny — and, well, a double move — both have a way of inflicting cruel punishment for some and bestowing greatness on others. Some other recent sports stories also fall under that category:
Blessing » The (London) Sun called Group C in next summer’s World Cup E.A.S.Y. — England, Algeria, Slovenia and Yanks — but it is also the most fortunate draw the U.S. has ever received. Of course, if they fail to advance, it’ll be remembered as a curse.
Curse » Former Ohio State center Greg Oden and current Buckeye standout Evan Turner both suffer serious injuries on the same weekend. Turner (fractured vertebrae) will be back in eight weeks while Oden (fractured kneecap) is looking at training camp next year. Turner is praying to avoid the No. 1 curse and have John Wall be the top pick in next summer’s draft.
Blessing or curse » We can’t figure out the Allen Iverson signing with Philadelphia. It’s great for him, certainly, but will it help turn around the 76ers, putting their young, arrogant contingent back in its rightful place, or is it a desperate attempt to give the fans something to watch since they’ve got little hope of actually making the playoffs?
