Rudy Giuliani said Monday the strong performances of Chris Christie, Jeb Bush and John Kasich at Saturday’s debate could end up boosting front-runner Donald Trump at the New Hampshire primary this week.
“You had the three governors. They all did well,” the former New York mayor said during an appearance on “Fox and Friends.”
“So they have to divide whatever that is,” Giuliani said of the proportion of the vote available to each governor.
He said Trump might have been further hurt by the governors’ performances if only one had performed well, thereby allowing one candidate to consolidate a larger share of support.
Giuliani said Bush “had maybe the best debate he’s had,” but wondered if Christie could take heat from attacking Sen. Marco Rubio.
“If you’re the one delivering the negative, you take a little bit of negative,” Giuliani said. “The reality is, he had to be the one to be to do the dirty work.”
Giuliani, who ran unsuccessfully for the GOP nomination in 2008, said he expected a larger turn-out to Tuesday’s presidential primary in New Hampshire.
