Two murders in two hours in the District
The District had two homicides within two hours of each other Monday, according to D.C. police. At about 6:45 p.m., Michol Brown, 24, and another man were found in the parking lot of 3920 South Capitol Street Southeast, suffering from gunshot wounds to the body. Brown was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The second victim was taken to an area hospital in stable condition. At about 5:15 p.m., police found Michael Yeager, 21, at his home in the 1000 block of First Place Northwest, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the body. He was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead. The cases are under investigation by members of the department’s Violent Crimes Branch. 18-year-old woman dies after crash
After fighting for her life for nearly a week, an 18-year-old Fairfax woman died Monday night from injuries sustained in a car crash. Morgan Cooke was sitting in the front passenger seat of a 2003 BMW 540i on Nov. 28 when the driver, a 21-year-old Fairfax man, lost control of the vehicle on Wolf Run Shoals Road and crashed into a tree. The driver and another man in the car were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said speed and alcohol were factors in the crash; Cooke was not wearing a seat belt.
Fairfax County police begin ‘Safe December’ initiative
Fairfax County police began an initiative Saturday to crack down on drunken driving during the holiday season. During its “Safe December” campaign Dec. 1-31, a select group of officers will saturate specific areas of the county every night. The department will conduct weekly DWI checkpoints, and plainclothes police cadets will attempt to purchase alcohol from retail stores and restaurants to see whether they check IDs. Alcohol-related crashes killed 322 people and injured 7,512 in Virginia last year, according to police. – Melissa Frederick
