The Defense Department has identified two members of the Air Force who died early Wednesday morning when people wearing Afghan military uniforms attacked their vehicle.
Capt. Matthew D. Roland and Staff Sgt. Forrest B. Sibley died after two attackers wearing Afghan National Defense and Security Force uniforms opened fire on their vehicle near Camp Antonik in Helmand province.
Coalition forces returned fire and killed the two shooters, according to a Defense Department statement.
Roland, 27, was from Lexington, Ky. He was assigned to the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron at Hurlburt Field, Fla.
Sibley, 31, was from Pensacola, Fla. He was assigned to the 21st Special Tactics Squadron at Pope Army Airfield, N.C.
These were the first U.S. service member casualties in Afghanistan since Aug. 8.
