Cuban-born actress who supports GOP candidate calls threats and lack of tolerance “ridiculous”

If you’re a minority woman who supports a Republican candidate for Governor, forget it. California is not having it.

Recently, actress Maria Conchita Alonso resigned from a San Francisco theater production of the “Vagina Monologues” after being threatened with boycotts and protests due to her outward support for Tea Party gubernatorial candidate Tim Donnelly. But the backlash has continued and Alonso sees it as “ridiculous.”

The Cuban-born actress, along with Donnelly, appeared on Dana Loesch’s TV show, Dana, on Friday to talk about the unexpected criticism and continued threats.

“Never, ever, anything like this crossed my mind…” Alonso said of the outrage. “It’s very strange, because I was born in Cuba. I was raised in Venezuela. We had to leave Cuba because of communism. Now Venezuela is going through the same thing… Now that I can’t talk and say something that is not how most people in Hollywood believe in? I’m sorry. Do I have to give away my SAG card?”

Donnelly and Alonso don’t agree on everything, and they even publicly disagreed in their ad. Donnelly is a hunting rights activist and Alonso is an animal rights activist. Their goal through their public disagreement was to get a dialogue going, not to ignite a war.

Alonso respectfully resigned from her play due to the threats she received, some of which were directed at her dog, Tequila. Several people had even threatened to burn down the theater where she was to perform.

“It’s so ridiculous, really,” Alonso said.

Donnelly criticized liberals for promoting tolerance only so far as people agree with their views.

“If you say the wrong thing and you speak the wrong ideology, then you’re not tolerated,” he said simply. “And no wonder people are leaving California and leaving this country searching for freedom elsewhere. We need to stand up and draw a line in the sand and say we are going to defend freedom in 2014.”

As sad as it is, Alonso’s story is familiar. During the 2012 election, Stacey Dash openly announced her support for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and committed social suicide as a Hollywood actress and an African American.
