Start your Wednesday with my Georgetown story on the emergence, at least somewhat, of freshman Jerrelle Benimon ahead of tonight’s showdown at Pitt.
And here’s my Wizards story, where we’ve all been duped into believing the whole thing is turning around at Verizon Center after a mere two victories in a row. It might as well be a limbo contest, given how low the bar is currently set.
Here are a couple other nice quotes from yesterday’s Wizards media scrum:
Flip Saunders: “Our thing is hopefully we can have a push here over the next week, push into the All-Star break. I guess the positive is, it might sound crazy, not to use [Jim] Mora’s line, ‘playoffs,’ but when you look at the situation of how the East is, you put together a string and you’re not that far away.”
Seriously, he really said that. Quick reminder, the Wizards are 14-26.
Brendan Haywood, on the importance of Mike Miller and Randy Foye: “Mike and Randy are definitely going to have to be important pieces for us if we’re going to make that playoff push. Mike Miller, he’s great at spacing the floor. At the same time, he really encourages ball movement out there. He’s one of the best ball movers we have on the team, and Randy’s really played well at the point guard spot. He’s going to have to solidify that now that Gilbert [Arenas] isn’t here for a stretch so he’s going to have to look to be aggressive. At the same time, get guys involvd, and he’s done that quite well.”
More Flip: “We’ve got to understand that the reason that we’ve had success is because we’ve played disciplined offensively, and we’ve played with good energy and played hard defensively.”
Foye: “We definitely don’t look as it as a lost season. Tomorrow is 41. We’re halfway through. You look at Chicago early on, they were saying it was a lost season. They turned it around and are now in the eighth spot.”
Miller: “We’re trying to figure out how to win, and that’s one of the most important things you can do. Defensively, we’re working together, we’re rebounding. Offensively, we’re trying to get other people involved. We’re moving the ball a little bit better, and those are the things it takes to win, and we’re doing it from the jump.”
