Even President Trump’s voters think he uses Twitter excessively.
A Morning Consult/Politico poll of nearly 2,000 registered voters conducted in late May found 72 percent of respondents said he uses Twitter “too much.” That’s up 16 percentage points from December, according to Morning Consult. About 57 percent of people who voted for Trump in 2016 agreed. Even 43 percent of people who expressed strong approval of Trump’s job performance agreed.
Overall, only 2 percent of respondents said he uses Twitter “not enough.”
About 13 percent said Trump uses it “about the right amount,” and 12 percent said “don’t know/no opinion.” About 26 percent of Trump voters said he uses it “about the right amount.” At 38 percent, equal numbers of Republican voters said Trump’s Twitter use was “a good thing” and “a bad thing.”
Roughly 54 percent of people who had a favorable opinion of him agreed the president uses Twitter too much.
“Since December 2016,” reported Morning Consult, “the share of Republicans who said Trump’s use of the platform is excessive has increased 16 points – more than the 11 point rise among Democrats, to 86 percent, but less than the 23 percent increase among independents, to 71 percent.”
Observers both liberal and conservative have sought to explain Trump’s commitment to tweeting by suggesting it plays well with his base, though this survey appears to debunk that refrain. While his supporters may believe Trump’s use of Twitter is a good thing overall, they seem to want him to cut back.
