»It’s going to be difficult for the offensive line to become consistent in the stretch zone in part because there’s too much penetration, disrupting cutbacks or forcing backs to run wider than desired. Center Erik Cook has issues with losing leverage, whether from quickness or his height. The line issues are why the Redskins would be wise to continue using a lot of two tight end sets; both Fred Davis and Logan Paulsen helped with their blocking Sunday. This is the problem right now: The Redskins need to be a running team with a good defense, but the ground game is just not consistent enough.
» Ryan Kerrigan is still a rookie. It was hard to believe that in the first four games, but he has been quiet in the last two. Sometimes it’s because of the opponent’s game plan. Philadelphia used a lot of quick passes, and that limited the pass rush. But Carolina did not, and Kerrigan failed to apply pressure. He still has a habit of trying to rush too straight up field, leading him sometimes to round off his rush as he tries to turn the corner and causing him to lose explosiveness when he wants to get inside.

The defense needs to do more. It has caused only eight turnovers in six games, leading to 24 points. The Redskins have not won a turnover battle yet this season. They clearly have improved from 2010, but they still give up too many big plays, partly because of inconsistent pressure. They need better coverage in the slot; Kevin Barnes has allowed several key catches the past two games. It’s a new area for him, but he needs to play better. If the Redskins want to accomplish anything this season, the defense must play at a higher level.
» Brandon Banks and the Redskins’ return game have turned all too mortal. Even last year when he didn’t break a long run it felt as if he was close. This year? It’s not happening. Banks is averaging 8.5 yards a punt return and 24.3 on kick returns, and on his last nine punt returns, Banks has gained just 19 yards. With all the injuries on offense, they need more from the return game — and that doesn’t just fall on Banks.
