The climate change cult has targeted American air conditioners as the latest enemy in preventing climate change Armageddon. Opponents have claimed that air conditioners are destructive to the environment because they use too much energy. As a result, many climate change doomsayers are demanding that greedy Americans relinquish their units and suffer in hot temperatures like many Europeans.
“Americans could learn a thing or two from the rest of the world when it comes to habits — since the vicious circle is nowhere more damning in those countries with the most units: China, US and Japan,” Paul Hockenos wrote in an opinion piece titled “A very European answer to air conditioning.”
Blaming selfish Americans for their luxuries is a frequent attack from the environmentalist tribe. My colleague, Esther Wickham, wrote a fantastic article on this topic earlier this week. The sanctimony for this to be a legitimate position is the latest in a long line of absurd requests by climate change alarmists.
Hockenos added, “It is self-indulgent to insist on chilly temperatures in the middle of summer and rooms at T-shirt warmth in winter. The donning of sweaters indoors when it’s cold outside, not because the AC is cranked up so high, is surely a habit one can adapt to.”
Remember in the early days of climate change alarmism, when the objective was merely to pivot away from fossil fuels? We were told everything would stay the same, and it was just a matter of transitioning to renewable energy. Once fossil fuels were largely eliminated, we would live in a climate change utopia and carbon footprint nirvana.
Sadly, this bait and switch is a recurring theme in climate change orthodoxy. The alarmists promised a reality that cannot coexist with their goals. Now, they want civilization to regress under the guise of saving the planet. Yet, these very experts and all their doomsday prognostications have been consistently wrong in their predictions. In fact, if this were any other field, in any other era, these people would be laughed out of existence due to their recurring failures. But, somehow, they are taken seriously and dictate policies that the entire world follows, regardless of their horrific record of assessments.
In less than a decade, the climate change cult has evolved into demands for a societal regression to make America uncomfortable again. There are calls for rationing energy use, eliminating air conditioning, buying electric cars, and many other unfathomable realities, all to adhere to the latest demands of climate change experts who are as reliable as the iceberg watcher on the Titanic.
Until they start showing they are credible, they should be ignored. And, regarding the latest hysteria to stop using air conditioning or the world will end, I think I can speak for most sane Americans when I say: Chill out and leave our air conditioners alone.
