Former Victoria’s Secret Angel Karlie Kloss is starting college at NYU this fall. She stresses the importance of having skills off the runway, and encourages young women to try computer coding.
That’s right – the 23-year-old supermodel took a course in coding last summer at the Flatiron School and decided to start a scholarship to help other young women learn more about technology.
“I do feel a responsibility to be an example for young women in general,” Kloss said. “That’s what Kode With Karlie is about: supporting girls to try coding even if they’re not interested in being a programmer. If I can inspire one girl to try it, I’ll be happy.”
Kloss’s experience growing up was anything but typical. She was discovered by a talent scout at age 13, walked in her first fashion show at age 15, and wore a Dior couture gown to her high school prom. Kloss now holds a spot on the Forbes’ list of highest-paid models.
Kloss told Glamour magazine she is headed back to school this month as an incoming freshman at NYU’s Gallatin School of Individual Study.
“I didn’t want to wait until I’m 30 to continue learning and challenging myself in new ways,” Kloss told Glamour. “I am 23 and at a very busy point in my career, but I hope it’s just the beginning. I want to do it all.”
Going into her freshman year, Kloss is still undecided on a major, but is eager for the challenge ahead.
“Next year will be a big balancing act,” she said. “But how exciting!”
