Ciattarelli team blasts ‘irresponsible’ media for calling close New Jersey governor’s race

The campaign for Jack Ciattarelli, the GOP candidate in the New Jersey governor’s race, lashed out at the Associated Press for calling the contest for Democratic incumbent Phil Murphy.

Stami Williams, the communications director for Ciattarelli, noted how the race is close and not all votes have been counted while castigating the media for declaring a winner on Wednesday.

“With the candidates separated by a fraction of a percent out of 2.4 million ballots cast, it’s irresponsible of the media to make this call when the New Jersey Secretary of State doesn’t even know how many ballots are left to be counted,” Williams tweeted in response to the Associated Press.

The Associated Press made the call with unofficial results showing an estimated 90% of votes being reported, which other news outlets cited in reporting that the Democrat won the race. Murphy had 50.02% support and 1,210,997 votes, while his Republican challenger had 49.23% support and 1,191,703 votes.

New Jersey has no automatic recall law, but a candidate can ask a judge for one within 17 days of Election Day.

If reelected, Murphy will be the first Democratic governor to win another term since 1977.

The Washington Examiner reached out to the Ciattarelli campaign for a statement but did not immediately receive a response.
