Commander reassigned amid new allegations

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier has temporarily reassigned FourthDistrict Cmdr. Hilton Burton amid new allegations of sexual misconduct against the veteran officer.

Police said the allegations are similar to those that surfaced last week accusing Burton of e-mailing nude pictures of himself to a woman from his work computer.

An internal affairs investigation was not able to confirm the allegations. But the reports last week have brought forward at least one new accuser, police said. – Scott McCabe

Workers begin recovery of derailed cars, coal

Work crews today will begin to move the six railroad cars that fell from a bridge into the Anacostia River on Friday.

Crews will use a floating dock and heavy equipment to recover the 600 tons of coal that fell into the water with the railcars.

Tests show that the spillage has caused little damage to the environment so far, officials said.

Investigators said the derailment was caused by a failure to secure the cars’ brakes while at the Benning Road rail yard. – Scott McCabe

Bathroom assault alleged

Loudoun County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Fairfax City man Tuesday night on a charge of attempting to sexually assault a 15-year-old in a men’s bathroom at Dulles Town Center.

The teenager reported to authorities that he was in a bathroom when an older man kissed him and exposed himself, sheriff’s spokesman Kraig Troxell said.

“It appeared he tried to get the teen to touch him,” Troxell added. Deputies arrested Syed Hasan Kamal, 64. The incident occurred in the lower level of the shopping mall. – Dan Genz
