A university in the United Kingdom is erecting a life-size statue of 18-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg.
The University of Winchester in Hampshire, England, is mounting the statue of Thunberg in a move it says is a “symbol of our commitment to take transformative action to combat the climate emergency.”
“This is a statement of action to stand with Greta and take inspiration from the life-saving message she has brought to us and urgently make a difference in the world.” Vice-Chancellor Joy Carter said about the plan.
Some have criticized the university over the project, which reportedly cost the school $32,000.

“What a total waste of money,” local resident Simon Dixon said about the statue, which will be unveiled later this month. “Total waste of money. I wonder whose bright idea that was.”
Thunberg became a global figure in the climate change movement in 2019 after she delivered an impassioned speech at the United Nations slamming world leaders for not doing enough to curb emissions.

“You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words,” Thunberg, who was 16 years old at the time, said in the speech. “Entire ecosystems are collapsing, we are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!”
Thunberg was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize last year and donated over $1 million in prize money from another humanitarian award to environmental groups.
