American History Museum plans staggered closings for renovations

Several exhibitions will soon begin closing at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History as staff prepares for a two-year, $85 million renovation.

The Benjamin Franklin exhibit, Fire and Water collection and Textiles Hall will close later this month. The Celia Cruz, Agriculture, Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald exhibits are scheduled to close in May. The Industrial Revolution exhibit will close in June. Ceremonial Court and the First Ladies exhibit will close in July, but the Contemporary First Ladies Dresses display will remain open.

The Hall of Musical Instruments and the Brown v. Board of Education, On Time, and Power Machinery exhibits also will close in July. The American Presidency exhibit will close in August.

All remaining exhibitions and displays at the museum on the Mall will remain open through Sept. 4.
