A Senate Democrat is warning his party against reacting to President Trump’s policies in the way he says congressional Republicans responded to former President Barack Obama.
Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., told MSNBC host Christ Matthews on Thursday evening that he “can’t fall into the exact same trap that I criticized Republicans for falling into.”
Murphy has supported and opposed some of Trump’s Cabinet nominees. Those decisions came down to personal decisions, rather than a flat-out refusal to work across the aisle on some matters.
The first-term senator wants to see members of his party explain their views to the public, rather than condemn the current White House’s policies and appear to be in opposition of every policy.
“Democrats will make a big mistake here if is all we’re defined by is what we’re against. We have to have – we have to have an argument to people about what we’re for,” Murphy said.
“We’re about economic growth for everybody in this country, not just millionaires and billionaires. We’re for a country that includes everyone and I think if we lead with that, we’ll figure out what we need to oppose, what we need to fight, what we need to let go.”
