HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation of China are recognizing the University of Hawaii and China’s Jinan University for medical research they’ve done together.
The two national institutions have awarded Hawaii and Jinan the U.S./China Collaborative Award.
The University of Hawaii’s medical school said in a statement Tuesday the award comes with funding.
The money will help researchers from the two schools continue their work on chronic inflammation, which is believed to be a significant cause of cardiovascular disease, and irritable bowel syndrome.
Their work has been fueled by a five-year, $1.25 million NIH grant to Hawaii Associate Professor Dr. Peter Hoffmann. Hoffman’s work caught the attention of Jinan’s Dr. Zhi Huang, who emailed Hoffman about working as a visiting scholar in Hawaii.
