Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin issued a challenge Thursday to all 50 of the country’s attorney generals “for a review of their policies and training policies for police and law enforcement.”
“Now this is not an indictment of our law enforcement agencies. I just want that to be clear,” Baldwin said, according to ESPN. “We know that there’s a select few — a very minute few — of law enforcement who are not abiding by those laws and policies. However, we also know that there are laws and policies that are in place that are not correcting the issue that we have in our society right now.”

Baldwin was responding to the deaths of two allegedly unarmed black men in Charlotte, N.C., and Tulsa, Okla., over the last few days. Protests have erupted in Charlotte, leaving a few policemen injured and one protester shot and injured.
“This is not an isolated incident,” said Baldwin, who is the son of a police officer. “This is not an isolated conversation. This is not isolated just to some specific parts of our country. We see that now. And the advancement of technology has proven that, from the video of Rodney King in 1991 to the numerous incidents that we now have visual evidence of today.”
He also said he has talked with San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who recently created a national controversy by sitting during the national anthem in order to protest racial injustice and police brutality.
His father told him that police training around the country is “not consistent,” which he calls an “issue.”
“There should not be an inherent risk when you have an encounter with law enforcement,” he said. “There should not be a concern or worry that the law enforcement is not there to protect you. And I think that we’re raising a culture or society right now that is questioning that very sentiment. And so as a human being, I can’t help but sit up here and tell you how I feel and let you know that it’s not OK.”
The state of Washington’s attorney general reached out to Baldwin later Thursday, saying he would be in touch about setting up a meeting.
.@DougBaldwinJr Watched your press conference today with interest. I’ll be reaching out soon to see if you’d like to sit down and chat. -BF
