It may be unconventional, but it seems to be working … for now. With Tim Tebow as their starting quarterback, the Denver Broncos appear to have stolen a page from Navy’s playbook. Despite completing just two passes Sunday, Tebow led the Broncos to a 17-10 win over the Chiefs and has won three of four starts this season.
In those three victories, Tebow has completed a total of 25 passes. Six different quarterbacks completed more than 25 passes Sunday alone.
The Broncos have rewritten their game plan to emphasize Tebow’s talents — which means running the ball as much as possible, including 55 times vs. the Chiefs.
But how long can a one-dimensional, run-only offense continue to produce wins?
The 8-1 San Francisco 49ers — the 29th-ranked passing team — are proving that a high-powered passing game is not a necessity to be successful.
So maybe the Broncos can thrive running the triple-option and surprising opponents with the occasional deep throw.
A remaining schedule that features games against the Jets, Bears and Patriots will show whether this offense can work over an extended period of time. Defenses surely will make adjustments to prepare for the unorthodox Broncos passer.
Tebow’s ability to make adjustments of his own will determine whether there is a future for him as a quarterback in the NFL.
