The man accused of violently attacking Paul Pelosi during the early morning hours of last Friday was slapped with federal charges on Monday.
David DePape, 42, is facing one count of attempted kidnapping of a U.S. official for his apparent bid to abduct House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), which can carry up to 30 years in prison, and one count of assault of an immediate family member of a U.S. official, which can entail up to 20 years behind bars.
PAUL PELOSI ATTACKER PLANNED TO BREAK NANCY’S KNEECAPS
Federal prosecutors filed the charges in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. DePape could also face additional state charges for the brutal onslaught against Paul Pelosi.
In a criminal complaint, prosecutors shed new light on what allegedly transpired in the Pelosi home early Friday and outlined information DePape gave to authorities when questioned. The suspect admitted to assaulting Paul Pelosi and was keen on harming Nancy Pelosi.
“DEPAPE also later explained that by breaking Nancy’s kneecaps, she would then have to be wheeled into Congress, which would show other Members of Congress there were consequences to actions,” the criminal complaint said.

Police arrived at the scene around 2:30 a.m. local time and found Paul Pelosi and DePape grappling over control of a hammer, according to an FBI affidavit included in the complaint. DePape later told authorities he needed the hammer to break through the glass door to enter the house. During the brawl with Paul Pelosi, he managed to strike him on the head with a hammer. Police then restrained the suspect.
Paul Pelosi was later “admitted to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital where he underwent successful surgery to repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands. His doctors expect a full recovery,” according to a spokesperson for Nancy Pelosi.
