White House press secretary Sean Spicer said the White House is confident the federal government won’t fall into a partial shutdown on Saturday, but couldn’t guarantee that won’t happen.
“I can’t guarantee,” Spicer said Monday. “But I think that the work (White House Budget) Director (Mick) Mulvaney and others have made in these negotiations is very positive. They feel very confident that that won’t happen.”
The federal government would go into partial shutdown if no spending deal were agreed to by midnight Saturday. Trump has refused to say if he’ll sign a spending bill that doesn’t contain his top priorities, namely a wall on the southern border with Mexico.
Spicer said negotiations from both the White House and Congress are feeling good about the possibility of getting a deal done.
“They are currently negotiating, we feel very confident that they understand the president’s priorities and will come to an agreement by the end of Friday,” Spicer said.
