Rep. Dave Brat, R-Va., drew a hearty round of boos at a Wednesday rally against the Iran deal after he mentioned House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
“Mitch McConnell and John Boehner…” was all Brat had to say to generate 10 seconds of booing.
Brat and other conservative Republicans spoke outside the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday to oppose the Iran deal and call on McConnell and Boehner to insist that a vote can’t take place until Congress has all the details about the agreement. Presidential front-runner Donald Trump and candidate Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, headlined the event.
Brat seemed amused and surprised by the strength of the jeers, and responded: “Alright!”
Congressman Brat shot to national fame in June 2014 when he stunned Boehner’s chief deputy, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, in a primary defeat. He is a member of the House Freedom Caucus, which has a fairly adversarial relationship with Boehner. The group often tries to gum up his agenda by threatening to withhold the votes of its 42 Republican members, and has even plotted to depose Boehner.
