Trump: Stacey Abrams ‘will have a terrific political future’

President Trump spoke highly of Georgia’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Stacey Abrams, after she concluded her bid to be the state’s 83rd governor Friday night.

It marked a turn in tone for the president, who weeks ago claimed Abrams would “destroy” the state if elected governor.

“Stacey Abrams fought brilliantly and hard — she will have a terrific political future!” Trump tweeted.

Though Abrams ended her candidacy, she refused to concede in the race against Republican Brian Kemp.

“This speech is not a concession, because concession means to acknowledge an action is right, true, or proper,” Abrams said Friday. “As a woman of conscience and faith, I cannot concede that. But, my assessment is the law currently allows no further viable remedy. Now, I can certainly bring a new case to keep this one contest alive, but I don’t want to hold public office if I need to scheme my way into the post. Because the title of governor isn’t nearly as important as our shared title: voters. And that is why we fight on.”

Her announcement came more than a week after the November midterm elections, with Kemp leading in votes and Abrams being unable to close the gap by enough to trigger a runoff or recount.

Trump also offered praise to Kemp for being “unrelenting.”

In a separate tweet, Trump congratulated Florida Republican gubernatorial candidate Ron DeSantis, who has been all but officially declared the next governor of Florida after a statewide machine recount.

“Against all odds, he fought & fought & fought, the result being a historic victory. He never gave up and never will. He will be a great Governor!” Trump said.
