New Jersey paper: Chris Christie ‘has lost touch with reality’

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who is considering a run for the Republican presidential nomination, woke up Wednesday to a bruising editorial from his state’s biggest newspaper that said he has lost his grip on reality.

The editorial was in response to an interview Christie gave to Fox News on Monday. In that interview, he said the reason an April Quinnipiac poll showed that 64 percent of New Jersey voters believe he shouldn’t run for president is because “they want me to stay [as governor].”

“The man has lost touch with reality,” the Star-Ledger wrote about Christie, who may seek the White House in 2016. “Maybe he doesn’t believe that himself. That might step on his core pitch about telling the truth, but it would at least tether him to the planet earth. The worry is that he really believes it. Politicians like him live in a bubble, surrounded by sycophants. Hard truths have a tough time penetrating.”

Under Christie, the Star-Ledger went on to say, New Jersey has a “rotten job market,” “high property taxes” and a “crumbling transit system.”

The poll did show, however, that 63 percent of voters believe Christie to be a “strong leader” and that when matched up against other confirmed and potential GOP presidential candidates, Christie still leads the pack in his state with 22 percent. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker was a distant second with 14 percent.

Christie’s office did not respond to a request for comment from the Washington Examiner media desk.
