MontCo residents set for lower energy taxes, sort of

Montgomery County residents won’t feel the heat quite so much starting Thursday.

A 300 percent energy tax increase passed by council members, just to make it through the fiscal year, will expire Thursday.

Instead, residents can look forward to a 150 percent increase, or about $13 extra a month, for the next two years. It is the most significant in a series of tax and fee increases passed by the county to fill a nearly $1 billion budget gap last month.

But County Executive Ike Leggett says the steeper tax can be avoided if residents limit air conditioning and electricity use.

The Washington region just endured the hottest June on record.
