Dogs survive alleged poisoning attempts in Pennsylvania

A Pennsylvania woman claims someone tried to poison her pets with a green substance found in a peanut butter sandwich in her backyard.

Ellen Nowakowski of Scranton said that after discovering the sandwich lying on the ground, she found an unusual, greenish substance that resembled rat poison inside, according to WNEP.

“Just the color, the green, just, you knew,” Nowakowski said. “And then, when I looked further in the yard, I found more.”

Sunday morning, Nowakowski went out into her fenced backyard while her two dogs, Zoe and Ruthie, were sleeping, according to the outlet. Nowakowski came across the pieces of the sandwich strewn across the lawn.

“My dogs slept in that day, thankfully,” Nowakowski said. “It was very lucky for me that they did.”

Nowakowski also discovered that parts of a peanut butter sandwich with the same green substance were found in her neighbor’s backyard.

“They have little dogs,” Nowakowski said. “They probably wouldn’t have survived the amount that was in there. Mine, it would have hurt them; I don’t know if it was enough to kill them.”

Officers from the Scranton Police Department confirmed the green substance was a poison used for rodents, the report added.

Scranton Animal Control Officer Katie Gallone told the outlet the organization will “continue to investigate” the incident alongside the Scranton Police Department to “try to figure out who did it and if there are any charges needed.”

The person responsible could face a summary or misdemeanor charge if officers can find a motive behind the incident, according to the outlet.

“My animals are my life. I would do anything for them; they’re my kids,” Nowakowski said, adding she’s “their voice right now” as she vows to “fight for them.”

The Washington Examiner reached out to the Scranton Police Department and Scranton Animal Control for a statement but did not receive a response.
