Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz said he is confident that the Rio Grande Valley, a Democratic stronghold in South Texas, will turn red in November with the victories of the state’s first Latina Republican representatives.
Cruz predicted during an immigration press conference Wednesday that the illegal immigration crisis on the southern border will spur the residents of Texas’s border counties to vote for Republican policies and GOP candidates.
BIDEN ADMINISTRATION TO END TITLE 42 ON MAY 23: REPORT
“I’ll make a political prediction for you: South Texas right now is a Democratic region of the state,” Cruz said. “Historically, it’s been Democrat for 100 years. My prediction is in November, you’re going to see South Texas turn red. There are three Hispanic women running as Republicans for Congress. I think you’re going to see at least two, and you might see all three elected to Congress, which is a sign of the seismic shift.”
Mayra Flores and Monica De La Cruz won their primaries for south Texas congressional seats, and a third, Cassy Garcia, is the front-runner in the May runoff election. If any of them win in the general election, they will be the first Hispanic Republican women to represent Texas in Congress.
Cruz argued that legal immigrants from Mexico and Central America are becoming disenchanted with the Democratic Party’s near-open border policy. He said the reason Democrats are OK with allowing the overflow to continue, despite the danger from cartels and human traffickers, is that they see illegal immigrants as potential Democratic voters.

“The reason why you can’t see border security legislation moving in this Democratic Congress is because the Democratic Party has decided it’s a political matter,” he said. “They support illegal immigration. They view the 2 million illegal immigrants who came last year as future Democratic voters, and if the consequence of it is little children being physically and sexually assaulted, they’re willing to take that consequence.”
