So what is it with Alex Ovechkin this season? Where has the two-time MVP gone?
I have to admit, I had these feelings close to this time last year. Then Ovi had a big January, and his early-season struggles were forgotten until the Caps’ playoff exit.
This season, he’s down nearly a half point a game from his average in 2009-10 (1.51 vs. 1.08). Has Ovechkin finally hit that predicted wall for his rough-and-tumble, skating-like-a-man-on-fire style of play?
He was a deserving two-time MVP and possibly could have won last season. But this season, not so much. Ovechkin has just 14 goals and 42 points.
What makes this much worse is NHL nemesis Sidney Crosby (32 goals, 65 points) enters Wednesday night’s games as the MVP front-runner.
With the Caps starting to heat up and Crosby and the Penguins leading the Eastern Conference in points, this year’s Winter Classic comes at a big time for the “Great Eight.”
It may bring the argument of Ovechkin or Crosby to a clear ending.
