Thanks to Abby Wambach’s two second-half goals Saturday night to complete a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Sky Blue FC, the Washington Freedom are nicely entrenched in a four-team battle for the final three WPS playoff spots.
With FC Gold Pride already in the playoffs, here’s how 2nd through 5th looks at the moment:
2. Philadelphia 10-8-4, 34 points, 22 games played; 3. Boston 9-7-5, 32 PTS, 21 GP; 4. Washington Freedom 7-8-7, 28 PTS, 22 GP; 5. Sky Blue 7-10-4, 25 PTS, 21 GP
With the victory, Washington hasn’t yet clinched a postseason berth, but the Freedom now own the tiebreaker with Sky Blue should the teams finish tied for fourth place and can set their sights on perhaps stealing third place – and thus earn a playoff home game – and there’s a super slim shot at second. The Breakers play all three of their final games on the road, as do the Independence. The Freedom could catch Philadelphia, but they’d have to hope to outscore them by more than 6 goals over the final two matches.
Here are the remaining schedules: Philly (at Chicago, at Gold Pride); Boston (at ATL, at Gold Pride, at Sky Blue); Washington (at CHI, vs ATL); Sky Blue (vs Gold Pride, at ATL, vs Boston).
