Voters, 2-1, say Mexico not doing enough to stop surge of illegal immigrants

Concern is high that Mexico is not doing enough to stop the flow of Central American immigrants rushing the U.S. border, according to a new survey.

A RealClear Opinion Research survey found that 65% are “concerned,” and of them, 37% are “very concerned.” Just 29% said that they are not concerned.

President Trump and his top aides recently won promises from Mexico to send troops to the border and block migrants from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras from heading north.

Trump has praised Mexico, but that message is not getting out, especially with Republicans, according to pollster John Della Volpe, research director for RealClear Opinion Research and co-founder of SocialSphere Inc., a public opinion and analytics firm in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

“There’s no question that the issue around the border is a significant issue,” he said.

His poll found that voters are largely in agreement on other concerns, such as trade and illegal drugs.

But on immigration a partisan divide was evident, though 51% of Democrats expressed concern about Mexico’s efforts on the border. For Republicans, it was 86% and for independents it was 64%.
