President-elect Trump told reporters the GOP is doing Democrats a favor by repealing Obamacare, saying that the healthcare law was going to implode this year.
Trump said during a press conference Wednesday that once his nominee for Health and Human Services gets confirmed the administration will announce a plan to “repeal and replace Obamacare.”
He added that repeal and replace would be “essentially simultaneously.”
“It will be essentially simultaneously,” he said. “It will be various segments but will be on the same day or the same week [as repeal]. It could be the same hour.”
Trump didn’t specify what would be in the replacement plan or whether repeal will be on hold until a plan can get approved in the Senate. While Obamacare could be repealed via a simple majority vote thanks to the procedural move reconciliation, any replacement plan would need 60 votes to break a filibuster.
Trump added that he is doing Democrats a favor as they currently own any problems with the healthcare law.
“They own it right now,” Trump said. “The easiest thing would be to let it implode in 2017 and then we would get whatever we wanted.”
