The waning days of D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty’s administration are starting to look like a quick tour of key Fenty initiatives.
At the top of his list is the school modernization program he launched nearly three years ago. On Tuesday, he’ll announce plans for revamping Dunbar High School in Northwest. At his side will be interim schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson and Allen Lew, the driving force behind the modernization construction who will step into the city administrator’s job when Vince Gray takes the mayor’s helm.
The Dunbar announcement comes one day after Fenty announced plans to finish modernizing Cardozo High School in Northwest. The school already has a new football field.
Up until Monday, the outgoing mayor hadn’t been seen much around town as he made national appearance after national appearance. The school modernization announcements are the icing on the legacy Fenty has sought to shape in national media. He’s portraying his tenure as one that achieved fast-paced results, but was sunk by unions that were fighting against change. The school modernization plans are a major by-product of the results to which Fenty has laid his claim.
