Workin’ on the weekend

Virginia legislators are continuing to hash out differences as they mark up the state’s current two-year budget, making a Saturday on-time adjournment virtually impossible. But they are still getting some work done.

Both the House and the Senate on Saturday signed off on final approval to criminalize the sale and possession of synthetic marijuana, also referred to as “Spice” or “K2.”

“The bill has significantly harsher penalties for the sale and distribution of these harmful compounds,” said Sen. Mark Herring, D-Fairfax/Loudoun. “Those who manufacture and sell these products know full well the purpose for which they will be used and should bear significant responsibility for the harm they are causing.”

The General Assembly also approved legislation from Del. Tim Hugo, R-Fairfax, to crack down on the abduction of minors for sexual purposes, and legislation from Sen. George Barker, D-Prince William, to require certain state contractors to use the federal E-Verify system to ensure that newly hired employees are eligible to work in the United States.
