Where does Steve Wheatcroft‘s 60 in the second round of the Prince George’s County Open rank among the great tournament rounds in D.C.-area pro golf history? Here are five other candidates:
5. Adam Scott (62, Avenel) » In the 2004 Booz Allen Classic, Scott fired a second-round 62 en route to victory. Others who shot rounds of 62 at Avenel in the final years of the Booz were David Duval and Glen Day.
4. Ben Curtis (62, Avenel) » In the opening round of the 2006 Booz Allen, Curtis made five straight birdies on the back nine before missing an 8-foot putt on No. 18 that would have tied the course record. Curtis went on to win the rain-marred event.
3. Hunter Mahan (62, Congressional) » In the final round of the 2009 AT&T National, Mahan tied the course record set three days earlier by Anthony Kim. Mahan’s performance was more impressive considering the Sunday pin placements. “I certainly didn’t see that score out there,” winner Tiger Woods said.
2. Charles Howell (61, Avenel) » Four days earlier in the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock, Howell shot an 83. But in the opening round of the Booz Allen he closed with eight consecutive 3s and played Avenel’s front nine (after starting on the back) in a record 28 strokes.
1. Shigeki Maruyama (58, Woodmont) » In 2000 U.S. Open sectional qualifying, Maruyama fired 13 under on Woodmont South, making 11 birdies and an eagle. It was the lowest score shot since sectional qualifying began in 1924.
