Mexican drug lord’s daughter launches ‘El Chapo’ brand beer

Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s daughter is selling a beer named after the incarcerated drug kingpin.

Alejandrina Guzman is launching the beverage under her “El Chapo 701” product line, named after her father with a nod to his 2009 ranking by Forbes as the 701st richest man in the world, according to Reuters. The brand already has a clothing line, and its first store is scheduled to open in February.

“This is an artisanal beer with 4% alcohol. This prototype is a lager, and it’s made up of malt, rice, and honey, so it’s good,” El Chapo 701 spokeswoman Adriana Ituarte said. “And the idea is for it to be sold at bars that stock craft beer.”

El Chapo, 62, was sentenced to life in a U.S. prison last year. He is head of the Sinaloa and at one point controlled up to half of Mexico’s drug trade. El Chapo shipped illegal drugs internationally and is recognized as one of the most prolific drug dealers in the world.

During his trial, numerous witnesses testified against El Chapo and accused him of overseeing the torture and murder of many of his competitors and others. The judge sentenced him to three decades in a Supermax prison and fined him for $12.6 billion in restitutions to the families of his victims.

Before he was sentenced in the United States, El Chapo had escaped from two maximum-security prisons in Mexico.
