The top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee wants information about White House counselor Kellyanne Conway’s trips aboard private and military planes since joining the Trump administration, including those with former Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price.
Price resigned Friday after it was revealed he took more than two dozen flights on private and military planes, costing taxpayers nearly $1 million. Conway accompanied Price on some of those trips.
“In contrast to Secretary Price, you have been silent about your actions, you have made no commitments to stop traveling on private flights, and you have not assured the American taxpayers that they will not have to pay a dime for your seat on these flights,” Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., wrote in a letter to Conway on Wednesday.
Price’s travel arrangements drew outrage from the public and members of Congress. In response to the outcry, the former Health and Human Services secretary vowed to reimburse the government for his share of the travel expenses, about $52,000.
Prior to stepping down, Price promised not to travel on private planes until the Health and Human Services Inspector General completed a review of his flight arrangements.
Though Price has addressed the controversy surrounding his use of private and military jets, Conway has remained silent about her involvement.
Cummings wants the White House counselor to notify the committee of the number of private and military flights she’s taken, where she flew to and from, the passengers on each flight, the cost of each flight, and the cost of her individual seat.
The Maryland Democrat also asked Acting Health and Human Services Secretary Don Wright, named after Price’s resigned Friday, and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin to turn over a copy of the check Price promised to submit as reimbursement for his travel expenses.
