The conservative Wall Street Journal editorial board, which has been one of Donald Trump’s most ardent critics, gave the presumptive Republican nominee credit this week for releasing a list of potential Supreme Court justices.
The paper wrote Thursday night that it was “good politics” for Trump to release the list, and that it was “clearly intended to bring along social conservatives who have been leery of Mr. Trump.”
“Nothing is certain with Mr. Trump, but that’s far preferable to the certainty that [likely Democratic nominee] Hillary Clinton would nominate a down-the-line liberal,” said the Journal. “The direction of the Supreme Court for a generation is up for grabs in November, and Mr. Trump’s list makes him far superior to Mrs. Clinton on that score.”
Trump on Wednesday released a list of 11 potential Supreme Court nominations, one of whom could fill the vacancy left by the late Antonin Scalia. Many conservatives applauded the list, but some warned Trump might not actually use the list if he were to win the election.
In an interview on Fox News after he released the list, Trump said he “would either choose from [the list] or pick people very close in terms of the spirit and the meaning of what they represent.”
