And the award for “Best performance as a publicist for Arab Oil” goes to — Matt Damon for his anti-fracking film ‘Promised Land’ that was actually funded by the government of Abu Dhabi.
This were just one example of the 2013 Liberty in Film awards given by the Moving Picture Institute on Tuesday. Adam Guillette, MPI’s director of development, announced the winners — or in the aforementioned case, loser — at a Heritage Foundation event in Washington, D.C.
“Some of this behavior by the left, like Matt Damon, was so ridiculous, you couldn’t help but mock it,” Guillette told Red Alert Politics.
“The hypocrisy is so outrageous you can’t help but laugh,” he added.
Guillette said MPI was inspired to come up with their own awards to coincide with the 85th Academy Awards, because it was “about time that somebody celebrated” films that “promote freedom.”
“And while we’re at it, we thought it would make sense to mock those that do a tremendous disservice to freedom,” he added. “There are probably more of the latter.”
The MPI awards are not what you expect to see on the Oscars. For instance, Guillette presented the “Best explanation of what makes charity possible” award to ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’
He explained in a statement, “When Bruce Wayne asks Alfred why the Wayne Family Foundation is no longer contributing to the boys’ home, Alfred explains that contributions are made possible by the profits of their company. ‘No profits, no charity.'”
According to the MPI head, film is the “most effective medium” to sway people’s opinions.
“The left knows the power of the film industry,” Guillette said during the Heritage event.
MPI promotes freedom and combats the liberal bias in the film industry through a number of ways, including offering conservative filmmakers fellowships in Hollywood. Guillette said MPI hopes to “create a whole army of freedom-oriented filmmakers.”
“Then, it’s impossible for one person to be ostracized,” he explained.
