De Blasio to Trump: ‘Lighten up’ over Starbucks cup

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio thinks Donald Trump’s claim that Starbucks’ newest holiday cups perpetuate the “war on Christmas” show that the GOP candidate “needs to get out more.”

When the Seattle-based coffee giant unveiled its annual “red cups” earlier this month, the minimalist design appeared noticeably different from prior cups, which had snowflakes and Christmas ornaments surrounding the Starbucks logo.

“No more ‘Merry Christmas’ on Starbucks. No more,” Trump told supporters in illinois earlier this week. He later suggested, “maybe we should boycott Starbucks.”

“If I become president, we’re all going to be saying ‘Merry Christmas’ again. That I can tell you,” he added.

After he was spotted sipping coffee from one of the signature red cups Wednesday, de Blasio told CBS‘ Marcia Kramer: “I think Donald Trump should lighten up.”

“He needs to get out more often,” de Blasio said, adding that Starbucks is doing work in other areas aimed at addressing race and income inequality.

“First of all, Starbucks serves every kind of person,” he said. “If more companies in America were doing what Starbucks is doing, this would be a very different discussion. But they’re a pretty lonely example of a company trying to address income inequality meaningfully.”

“I don’t care what they put on their cups. I care about what they do for working people,” he said.

In July, shortly after Trump announced his White House bid, de Blasio told CNN he doesn’t think the billionaire accurately reflects most New Yorkers.

“I’ve said I don’t think he represents the values of New York City,” the mayor said. “He’s from here but he doesn’t represent our values. Because this is the ultimate city of immigrants and a place that includes every kind of people in our society.”
