The League of Conservation Voters will officially endorse Hillary Clinton on Monday at an “Environmentalists for Hillary” campaign event in Nashua, N.H.
The liberal environmental group’s early endorsement of Clinton over the other two Democratic primary candidates, Martin O’Malley and Bernie Sanders, marks the first time in three years that they have endorsed a candidate before the primaries.
“When it comes to fighting the climate crisis, the stakes couldn’t be higher — and we are confident that Hillary Clinton is the right person for the job,” Gene Karpinski, president of the LCV Action Fund, said in a statement prior to the event. “With her proven history of leadership, strong environmental record, and a campaign committed to building a clean energy future, Hillary Clinton is without a doubt the most effective leader to stand up to Big Polluters and push forward an aggressive plan to tackle climate change and get it done.”
The League of Conservation Voters spent nearly $8 million several 2012 Senate races, donating to and creating ads for environmentally conscios candidates. Following the endorsement, the LCV will launch a “Greenroots” program to mobilize members in early states to volunteer for Clinton.
The group added that Clinton has “a long history of environmental leadership including her introduction of climate and clean energy bills as Senator to her work with foreign countries to lower pollutants as Secretary of state.
On the campaign trail, Clinton has pledged that by 2027 the U.S. will generate enough renewable energy to power every home and that by the end of her first term she would install 500 million solar panels.
