THE 3-MINUTE INTERVIEW: Karen Maria Alston

Alston is a Washington-based entrepreneur and the head of Alston Marketing. Founded in 2002, the firm has a diverse roster of clients that has included the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Capital Bikeshare and Prince George’s County. Describe your experience as a young black female entrepreneur?

I am a fourth-generation entrepreneur and fourth-generation college graduate from Oklahoma. I was raised to live the dream, work hard and never questioned those beliefs. No one ever said to me ‘You can’t become anything.’ Yes, there’s racism, sexism, classism and all the other ‘isms,’ but that was never an excuse. Sure things get tough, but you persevere and get through it.

What made you chose D.C. for your business and residence?

I went to college here and then went to New York City. I love New York but I wanted New York ‘light.’ D.C. gives me my urban lifestyle but it wasn’t too fast-paced.

How do you relieve stress?

I manage my stress by working out. I enjoy life more and try to have the best body I can have. I’m really proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish.

How has the economy affected your business?

Thankfully, it’s a little better now. But 2008 and 2009 were blood baths in the economy. A few of my friends had their businesses go under. It’s still tough, and who knows when our economy will bounce back like before.
