Poll: Trump trims Clinton lead in Michigan

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has cut into Democrat Hillary Clinton’s lead in Michigan and now sits within the margin of error with less than two months until election, according to a new poll.

According to a new WXYZ/Detroit Free Press poll released Thursday, Trump trails Clinton by only 3 points, as the former secretary of state takes 38 percent to Trump’s 35 percent. Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson pulls 10 percent support, while Green Party nominee Jill Stein takes 4 percent. Thirteen percent of respondents were undecided.

The poll, which was conducted between Sept. 10-13, also has a margin of error of 4 percent, putting Trump squarely in striking distance. The poll was also taken right before Trump’s stop in Flint, Mich. on Wednesday, which made news after a pastor at a historically black church asked him to stop attacking Clinton during his remarks.

Over the past week, polls have turned in Trump’s favor both nationally and in battleground states, including Ohio, Florida, and Iowa, as repeated missteps by Clinton has thrown the race into flux. Specifically, her Friday remarks saying that half of Trump’s supporters belong in a “basket of deplorables” as well as her decision to “power through” an illness that caught up to her Sunday at a memorial commemorating the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

According to the latest RealClearPolitics polling average, Clinton holds a 5.2-point lead in the state.
