President Trump defended Asian Americans who are being wrongfully harassed about the spread of the coronavirus.
Several Asian Americans have reported facing harassment or bigotry during the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States. In two tweets posted Monday, the president condemned such harassment.
“It is very important that we totally protect our Asian American community in the United States, and all around the world,” he wrote. “They are amazing people, and the spreading of the Virus is NOT their fault in any way, shape, or form. They are working closely with us to get rid of it. WE WILL PREVAIL TOGETHER!”

Trump has been accused of stoking anti-Asian sentiments for using the term “Chinese virus” to describe the illness. He has defended the term by noting that the outbreak is believed to have started in Wuhan, China. There is also evidence that the Chinese Communist Party covered up the severity of the outbreak, leading to a delayed response to the pandemic.
