Representatives for President Trump and Ohio Gov. John Kasich cannot agree on who set up a Friday afternoon meeting between the Republican leaders. Nevertheless, the two will sit down in the Oval Office after a sometimes-contentious past six months.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer initially announced the meeting during a Tuesday press conference. Spicer said Kasich’s visit was planned following multiple requests from his office to see Trump.
John Weaver, Kasich’s spokesman, denied Spicer’s account of how the meeting came to be.
“@JohnKasich respects office of the President & is happy to meet with Trump at the president’s repeated requests. #TwoPaths,” Weaver tweeted after Tuesday’s briefing.
Kasich was the last Republican to drop out of the GOP presidential race before Trump won the nomination at the convention last summer. The two politicians have had their fair share of disagreements and continue to clash despite Trump’s winning the election.
At last weekend’s Munich Security Conference, Kasich implored European leaders should be worried about Trump’s treatment of the press, support for U.S. allies and Russia’s hacking of Democratic officials’ emails during the election.
It’s unclear what the two will discuss at Friday’s meeting.
