Harris Teeter opens in NoMa

A full-service grocery store in the neighborhood known as NoMa (North of Massachusetts Avenue) is the icing on the cake for Ward 6 Councilman Tommy Wells.

“I’m thrilled that Harris Teeter has opened its doors in our NoMa neighborhood — one of the fastest-growing parts of our city,” Wells said. “Frankly, I’m not sure we can call NoMa an emerging neighborhood anymore; I think it’s emerged.”

Getting a full-service grocery store is a coup for a growing neighborhood that right now has a lot of office buildings but is working on getting more residential developments complete. Mom ‘n pop advocates aside, it’s tough to attract the urban Gen Y’s if you don’t have a brand name grocery store within walking distance.

The Harris Teeter opened on First and M streets Northeast, near the entrance to the New York Ave.-Florida Ave.-Gallaudet U Metro station Tuesday night. According to the company, the new store is employing more than 200 staff members, nearly 70 percent of which live in the surrounding community.

The company also gave a total of $10,000 to two neighorhood schools that will use the money to supplement their literacy and math programs.
