Iraqi prime minister claims victory over ISIS in Mosul

Iraq is claiming victory in Mosul, despite some Islamic State fighters remaining in the city.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi tweeted the city was “liberated” Sunday morning, but CNN reported there are still ISIS fighters remaining in the city.

“PM Al-Abadi arrives in Mosul to announce its liberation and congratulate the armed forces and Iraqi people on this victory,” Al-Abadi’s account tweeted Sunday morning.

Iraqi state TV is reporting there are still some ISIS fighters in the city, despite Al-Abadi’s proclamation.

Iraq’s second-largest city has been the scene of a months-long, hotly-contested battle between Iraqi forces and ISIS. The city has been under ISIS control since July 2014.

CNN reported horrific atrocities were committed by ISIS in the city during the last three years, including beheading people in public, gay men being thrown off of buildings and imprisoning men who didn’t grow beards and women who wouldn’t wear burqas.
