Nestled in the city of Pisa, Italy, the legendary Leaning Tower of Pisa draws visitors from across the globe.
La Torre pendente di Pisa, as it is known in Italian, is the bell tower of the Duomo (cathedral). Construction began in 1173. The 183-foot structure has 294 steps, but soil under the foundation has caused it to tilt over time.
Youth from all over shared their opinions of the historical structure.
“It?s awesome that it?s tilted because they built it wrong,” said Harrison Lierz, a kindergartner in Colorado.
The Fischer family, originally from Wisconsin but currently living in Germany, visited the renowned edifice in June.
“I think it?s one of the most marveloussights I?ve seen since we came to Italy,” said Maggie Fischer, a third-grader at Aukamm Elementary School in Wiesbaden, Germany.
Stevie Cheshire, of Ontario, Canada, spent some time taking in the view of the structure.
“I thought it would lean more. I really like the decorations on the pillars, though,” the soon-to-be freshman at Bradford District High School said.
In reality, the tower is leaning less.
Recently, a 20 million-pound effort straightened the top of the edifice by 18 inches due to safety concerns. This restored it to its stance in 1838.
Will the slighter tilt mean fewer visitors? Who knows? But at least the Leaning Tower of Pisa won?t topple over anytime soon.
