Sen. Marco Rubio is set to win the endorsement of Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey Wednesday, two days after the 2016 hopeful finished a strong third in the Iowa caucuses.
A source with knowledge of the plans confirmed the impending announcement to the Washington Examiner, which could come as early as today.
News of the planned endorsement comes one day after South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott announced his support of the Florida senator, who is working to coalesce members of the party behind him with the New Hampshire primary only six days away. Tuesday, Rubio also won endorsements from Reps. Steve Womack and Rick Crawford.
He would become the sixth U.S. senator to endorse Rubio, topping the five backing former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush for most of anyone in the GOP field.
Rubio is scheduled to spend all of the next six days in New Hampshire as he looks to capitalized on his momentum out of Iowa, where he won 23 percent of support from caucus-goers — only one point behind Donald Trump.
Rubio currently sits third in New Hampshire behind Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz with nearly 11 percent support, according to the RealClearPolitics average. Rubio is second in the Washington Examiner‘s presidential power rankings.
Toomey himself has a contentious reelection effort underway, with his seat being one of the most sought after targets by the Democrats. Former Rep. Joe Sestak, who narrowly lost to Toomey in 2010, and Katie McGinty, the former chief of staff to Gov. Tom Wolf, are vying to take on the Allentown native.
The Rubio and Toomey campaigns did not respond to requests for comment.
